How long must case notes be kept?
Tue 20-Jul-04 11:08 AM

Can someone please advise me of the lenght of time advisers are legally required to keep case notes, if any?

We keep them 6 years but I can find no reference to say they must be kept for X amount of time. We are not intending to change the time we keep them but do want to check it is correct.

Thank you in advance if you can help

Basically it is up to each organisation to decide for itself (subject to LSC requirements if applicable). Six years is the usual time as a suit for negligence will (in most circumstances) be time barred after that under the Limitation Act 1980.
