Does it work for you?
Wed 27-Aug-08 01:19 PM

This is the title of a leaflet produced by HM Revenue * Customs re: WTC encouraging take-up by asking people to answer three questions on the front cover by scratching off yes or no.

1. Are you aged 25 or over?
2. Do you work over 30 hours a week?
3. Do you eanr less than £12,865 if you're single or £17,400 with a partner?

Anybody else seen this? Seems to be distributed door to door but with what and by whom? Any clues?

Mike

Mike - this is also on the DirectGov website, and similar material is being distributed by trades unions. We're getting lots more calls from people without children who've seen this leaflet.
Haven't come across door to door delivery but wouldn't be suprised. On the back of the 10p tax debacle the govt did say they would do more to promote take up of WTC amongst childless people.

Yes, I've had this one delivered with a pile of pizza menus. I couldn't resist scratching off the panels and was very disappointed to find I'm still not entitled!

I live in a postcode area that's considered 'deprived', so maybe it's being targetted?

LITRG tried many months ago to get this campaign withdrawn as we felt it was misleading on a number of levels.

The scratchcard, when last we saw it, did not make any reference to the fact that those with disabilities can have higher incomes or can claim under 25. Similarly parents under 25.

One other thing we didn't like was it ignores the impact of the £25,000 disregard.

All these things can therefore give a range of people the notion that WTC is not for them; totally contrary to the intent and excluding particularly vulnerable people.

We thought that this had been agreed with HMRC at the time, and although some of the longer stuff now appearing on Directgov does take on board some of the issues, it does so inadequately.

We are opening discussions again with HMRC.
