Interest on new loans for housing repairs Mon 10-Jul-06 10:14 AM
Need some clarification about payment of interest on new loans for housing repairs. One part of the regs states that interest on loans for certain housing repairs will be met but then in another part it states that a loan incurred during the relevant period will not qualify. Am a bit confused as to which overrides the other, ie should a home owner need to take out a loan for repairs whilst on pension credit does this mean they will not get any help towards payment of the interest through their benefit? Help!

I agree that these regulations are not easy to understand. Sadly when are they? I think it helps to separate the mortgage (loan) to buy the home from other loans that are taken out for other reasons. This is restricted to a fixed list. So if the loan was taken out when on pension credit to pay for repairs it qualifies despite its in the “relevant period” To qualify the loan must be to pay .. for major repairs necessary to maintain the fabric of the building. Its only the interest on the loan that is paid.
