Friday and Treasury Mathamaticians

This I offer you as a prime example of the logic of a treasury spokesman on Newsnight last night.

Jeremy was grilling him on the pay award just announced for public sector workers, and particularly Nurses, who are to be offered 1.9%.
When asked how he could justify this, given that the pay review board has recommended 2.5%, he came out with a classic defence:

"ah yes" he said, with a dead pan expression, "but when you add it to the annual progression, it comes out at 4.5%".....Pardon? I said to the cat, what did he say?

But fortunately he got stuck on auto pilot after that, and repeated it several times, which still did nothing to enhance the logic of the theory: even the cat looked bemused.

The other phrase which stood out was when he said that the award was "an example of our commitment to maintain rigid financial disipline".

Not directly welfare rights stuff but just consider: the treasury is the department that is ultimately responsible for advising other Gov Departments on financial issues, and the department that controls the purse strings for all other arms of the administration, including DWP.

With such astute people in charge what do have we to fear.......
