Mind your language!

Today’s rightsnet news story on ID cards contains the following extract from government guidance:

“'Customer facing staff will need to be able to recognize the cards and to check they are valid”.

“Customer facing staff”!! Well I’m sorry. While I generally mistrust the political motives/sympathies of members of organizations such as the Plain English Campaign (or whatever they’re called) and I think that most of them don’t get laid enough, I trust that members will be writing very strong letters to The Times.

That phrase should be taken out and shot, swiftly followed by the person who came up with it.

Rant over.
