Income Support and part-time work
Wed 15-Jul-09 09:29 AM

Hello I have a case where things are not adding up and need your help.

Client is in college / care leaver/ and working part time earning £25pw. IS are deducting this income from her claim.
I read somewhere that the first £5 should be disregarded, but now can not find this piece of work.

Does she need to have all of the £25 pw deducted??? We are encouraging our young people to work, study but all they earn is taken away from their benefits and it does work our that they will be better off not working.

Any comments on that will be more then helpful.

Regards,
Antonina

£5 p/w is the "basic" disregard.

In some circumstances, the higher disregard applies (£20 p/w) e.g. if you are a lone parent. Check page 876 of the CPAG handbook for a full list.

Good luck!
