End date of NI contribution liability
Fri 14-Dec-07 02:35 PM

Does a woman cease to become liable to pay NI contributions a) from her 60th birthday, or b) from the 5 April prior to her 60th birthday (that being the end of her working life)? The latter seems to be more logical but CPAG suggests the former.

Thanks

the end of her working life is the day she stops work....

the 5th aprial prior to her 60th birthday wouldbe illogical. for instance, my birthday is july (no, i'll not be 60); why should i not pay NICS until last payslip in July (assuming i do indeed retire then. or the case where someone's birthday is in march. i doubt if it would be intended they pay no NICS for an entire year!

I had a quick look on the national insurance website which says that you have to pay NICs if you are working and "under state pension age". So your liability stops when you reach the age at which you would qualify for a state pension if you chose to claim it.

knew there'd be something to that effect there.

puzzled, peter, as to why you would suggest that the 5th april prior to 60th birthday is the end of a woman's working life anyway ...
