"The Department of Health today issued a correction to figures published listing the number of benefits claimants diagnosed as obese.
As a result of a Departmental administrative error, a response given to a Parliamentary Question tabled by Earl Howe and answered by Lord Warner on 9 February 2004 stated that 900,000 people claiming contributory Incapacity Benefit were diagnosed as obese. This figure should have read 900 people and relates only to people who receive IB as a result of obesity.
The Department apologises for this error and any difficulties this may have caused."
