Community Care Grant
Mon 07-Jul-08 04:49 PM

I hope someone can advise me. We resettled a young person from one of our hostels into a local authority property in May. At that time she was not able to claim a community care grant for furniture as she was working & not in receipt of benefit. She has now been made redundant and is in receipt of JSA. She has not been able to buy any essential furniture (she doesn't even have a bed) and I would like to know if she would be entitled to a grant for furniture, even though she moved from us in May. We are providing Floating Support and would do a supporting letter to this effect.

Thanks.

Irene

Hi Irene

Have a look at the link for an idea of some of the issues involved.

http://www.rightsnet.org.uk/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=107&topic_id=1164&mode=full

As is mentioned in the discussion, each case has to be judged on its own facts. Also see CPAG, p491 that states that ‘setting up home’ “may still be in process (or even begin) some time after a move has occurred”.

Regards
Paul

Thanks Paul, that is helpful. I was just a bit worried that, because our client had taken up the tenancy about 2 months ago, SF might say she was not entitled to help with furniture.

Hi
It was me who orginally posted about the new CCG supercentres - all the Preston ones are now processed in Manchester full stop. I am currently dealing with a similar issue - young lady was undergoing planned resettlement but at time was employed - now claiming 3 months in IS - still has no furniture and CCG refused. We are going to request review as she meets all the criteria - guidance says nothing about any period of employment so I think this is down to interpretation and a definate training issue for DWP staff. Will let you know how we get on
regards Caroline

Hello Caroline,

I've only just spotted your message so apologies for this late reply. I will also let you know if our client was successful or not.
