spotted any rightsnet gremlins ?
Mon 28-Jul-08 02:58 PM

hi -

the new version of rightsnet has been live now for a couple of months and has mostly gone smoothly .. thanks for the positive feedback you've emailed in

am aware however of a few gremlins and will be shortly working on some fixes .. so wondered whether you've spotted anything that we haven't that you wanted to add to the list ..

.. what we're looking at at the moment are -

  • the fact that, in the discussion forum, some posts get cut off on the right hand side of the page; and that some longer links that people have posted in their messages haven't 'wrapped' onto another line and have instead forced the page off the right hand side
  • that unless you've got the latest version of explorer, you can't select a section of text from a news story or briefcase summary to cut and paste
  • some display issues if you're using a firefox browser - including layout of discussion forum threads; and the text appearing more lightweight or 'thin' than in explorer

Post any thoughts here, or email us if you'd prefer via http://www.rightsnet.org.uk/contact.shtml

cheers - shawn

that seems to happen regularly, don't you mean the question ends up being dated after the replies, i.e., the date on the original question is changed.

and i still think being able to quote would be useful!

thanks everyone ...

  • re - the question ending up being dated after the replies in discussion threads ... yes, seems to happen on the occasions we have to delete rogue messages .. thankfully therefore it doesn't happen that often (famous last words!)
  • re - automatic quote feature ... we found that people were clogging up the forum using quotes unnecessarily resulting in very long threads .... i suppose as a fallback, we always have cut and paste
  • re - updater ... yes its gone i'm afraid ... feedback and stats showed that it was one of the least used areas of the site ... as an alternative however see newcastle welfare rights version (goes up to 2050 !!) @ http://www.newcastle.gov.uk/core.nsf/a/wr_nav2_bennews?opendocument
... we're now working on other changes with our web developer .. will keep you posted

cheers - shawn

I'm still having problems with lists of unread threads. If number of posts displayed is 25 and there are more than 25 unread topics, i can only view the first list of unread posts. So i have to move to display 100 posts per page option.

If, as today, i find there are more than 100 unread topics and i go to display 100 posts, i still can only see the number 1 list and can't find an easy way to access the others (other than marking each forum as read one by one until the total unread falls below 100).

hi -

quick update ... still working on the forum display issues i'm afraid.. proving to be a harder nut to crack than we'd thought ...

.. in the interim however we have now fixed the fact that those using older browsers were not able to select a section of text to cut and paste from news stories or briefcase summaries ....

we also had the issue of, for those using a firefox, the text across the site appeared more lightweight or 'thin' than in explorer ... however, a solution to this is ...

.... right-click the Desktop, then select > Properties > Appearance > Effects ... and then select ClearType as the type smoothing method.

ps - paul .. sorry seem to have missed your posting ... i can't replicate the problem you're having i'm afraid, works fine this end ... maybe give me a call and we'll see if we can get to the bottom of it?

cheers - shawn

layout of discussion forum threads now fixed for those using the latest version of firefox (version 3) ....

... most display issues also now fixed for explorer users, except some words still cut off in random posts ... we remain 'on to it' ....

I don't know if this is a gremlin or I'm just doing something wrong but I don't seem to be able to change my job title for my postings.I've followed the on screen instructions but nothing happened, any thoughts?

hi ... you'll need to re-register i'm afraid

... though will only take a minute or so .. see http://www.rightsnet.org.uk/dc/dcboard.php?az=register

(changing any details without re-registering results in all your previous posts getting updated with the same details)

cheers - shawn
