Income Support and part-time work
Fri 10-Jul-09 11:12 AM

Hello I have a case where things are not adding up and need your help.

Client is in college and working part time earning £25pw. IS are deducting this income from her claim.
I read somewhere that the first £5 should be disregarded, but now can not find this piece of work.

Does she need to have all of the £25 pw deducted??? We are encouraging our young people to work, study but all they earn is taken away from their benefits and it does work our that they will be better off not working.

Any comments on that will be more then helpful.

Regards,
Antonina

You don't mention the basis on which your client claims income support, but if none of the higher disregards apply, the £5 disregard for earnings is at paragraph 9 of Schedule 8 to the Income Support (General) regulations 1987

Yes £5 is the basic disregard. Unless she's a lone parent, carer or receives a disability premiuim, the higher disregard (£20) does not apply.
Have a look at page 876 of CPAG for the full list of people who qualify for a higher disregard.

Good luck!
