My MP's a DWP minister!
Wed 19-May-10 05:29 PM

My MP Maria Miller is the new junior minister at DWP (portfolio unspecified so far).
Anybody with experience of having a DWP minster as MP - what should Basingstoke expect? And who do we turn to if we are having problems with DWP?

You could invite them to attend a regular meeting with the bureau to discuss current issues (using CitA reports etc). Notify them of the issue in advance and seek how good their brief from their senior civil servants is when they attend.

We did this when our local MP was SofS. It was illuminating - did it make any difference to policy?? And of course she will still be your clients constituency MP able to take up an issue with herself / ministirial colleagues.

John Hutton was our MP when he was something in DWP (i think) i must confess that i'm not really into politics.

Didn't make any difference to us using him to help with cases we had to refer.

He wouldn't sign early day motions though - can't remember why now.

Hi Nicky

John Hutton was Secretary of State for the DWP between 2005 and 2007. Staunch Blairite and authoritarian apparatchik.

But at least he had some sense when he was in charge of Energy - telling the Labour conference the lights would go out unless nuclear power was accepted, & trying to actually do something about it. Not like the unreconstructed so called environmentalists who've been in charge of that dept. ever since he left it!

he was one of my lecturers at Newcastle Poly when i was studying for my law degree back in the day (him and steve byers) and moved somewhat rightwards thereafter...IMHO
