Commissioners Decisions ruined my life
Thu 29-Jul-04 09:08 AM

Am I the only person whose computer locks up in Word every time they download a CD from the Commissioners website? I mean at least it lets me print the thing but it never fails to freeze Word up afterwards and I have lost letters and things as a result.

I thought it was my computer but it still happens with my new one. It could be our network though I suppose.

Am I also the only person who has confidence problems with the use of apostrophes in regard to this particular branch of the Department for Constitutional Affairs? The original title of this thread was "Commissioners' Decisions ruined my life" and the first sentence contained an apostrophe in a similar position (although if I had spelt out CD the apostrophe would have appeared before the final 's'). I know I'm right, but I did not feel confident to write it correctly. Does anyone else have similar nagging doubts?

....not only paranoid about a vindictive computer, but he also thinks he's gloriously indecisive.........but isn't sure

This calls for a white coat with lots of nice shiny buckles, a dark room and lots of pills.........

Yes, I get exactly the same thing. Most annoying.

The only way I get round it is every time I close a CD 'word' file I go into the "task manager", select the 'processes' tab, select 'winword.exe'and click on "end process".

This closes the word application ( best to close and save any open work before going into the CD site).

Its not recommended but it works and stops my system crashing.

I frequently have problems trying to get decisions from the OSSCSC site. I generally just get a frame with the title at the top but the text doesn't display. I am using Windows XP most of the time, and have found that I rarely get the problem in Windows 98.

Decisions are made by (plural) Commissioners, so the apostrophe should go after the 's'.

Your more likely to find that the problems they you are experiencing are due to conflicts in the versions of office (Microsoft Word), that you are using, and that version used by the Commissioner's Office. The version of office that you are using, has nothing to do with the version of Windows as noted above, as the two issues are completely separate.

Some of the unreported decisions that are coming out of the Commissioner's office are 'protected' (un-editable), and the type of encryption used is only available in the XP or 2003 versions of office(the 2003 version is later than the XP version, and is the most recent version).

So if your are using office 95, Office 97, or office 2000, then you are more likely to have problems and you should be talking to your IT depts' about getting more up-to-date software, (unless you have the 2003 version of office, in which case you have a firewall issue, or an issue with the settings on your PC, but that is much less likely but would explain 'download' issues, as opposed to 'display' issues).

With this many versions of office, you all now know why Bill Gates is as rich as the papers say he is....
