Benefits for those with Dementia.
Thu 05-Apr-07 11:15 AM

Does anyone know of any benefits available to someone with dementia , other than the reduction in Council Tax? Perhaps relating to Home Care charges or anything else. Client has about £100,000 in savings.
Thanks.

Have you tried Attendance Allowance? Someone with dementia, living at home should qualify for the highest rate depending on their condition.

Assume that you have already advised the client's partner or, if single, close family members about the importance of having a Power of Attorney in place?

Unfortunately if the dementia is so far advanced that the client is unable to understand what a power of attorney is, he cannot create one and you are stuck with the Court of Protection procedure - not a good position to be in. If he can understand it, on a good day when the wind is in the right direction, get in quick and apply to register it at once (the standard for understanding you are giving a power of attorney is lower than being able to manage your affairs, so it is perfectly possible to create and register within a very short period of time).
