PCA/medicals for peopel with mental health problems
Wed 03-Jun-09 12:47 PM

I know this is a bit vague, but I'm sure I remember something somewhere saying that the DWP should get evidence from the doctor treating the person with mental health problems rather than/as well as subjecting them to a medical by an EMP? Does anyone know what I'm talking about and where I might find it?

Your probably thinking about the IB113, it is not a legal requirement, but was always previously complied with now they don't seem to bother, and also it appears all the info on DLA has suddenly dropped of the ICB computers , as they are also sending out IB50 to clients exempt because they receive HR Care.Information they had known in the past.

That's the one. We've seen a sudden increase in people with mental health problems being sent for medicals and failing the PCA. It did used to be that medical services would request a psychiatric report, but since the surge in IB50s coming from Atos this seems to have fallen by the wayside.

I still mention the lack of IB113 in appeal submissions. The main issue i put forward is that the IB113 asked about someone mental ability to even attend a medical examination. This could be a real issue if the claimant has violent tendencies and is there to protect the EMP as well as the claimants well being.

Did not the guidance that IB113 should be requested only apply to clients who previously qualified for the mental health exemption? I may be wrong about this.

No, it was all mental health cases and thereafter if the EMP said one was required for an update. I was an IB decision maker in a previous employ-I defected.

Welcome back from the darkside dbcwru, I had a case this week arrive, he has Schizophrenia, and was made exempt on 4 previous occassions based on IB113's , this time round no IB113, and examined by a Nurse, who describes client has mildly schizophrenic, nice one.Don't think we'll lose this one but it is a lot of pain and and distress the client doesn't need.

Mildly schizophrenic-thats a good one!!
I really think all mental health clients should have a full GP or CPN report before they are scrutinsed by Medical Services.
I saw an ESA mental health case earlier this week-i had trouble getting them into the interview room and to talk to me-how they scored 0 points ive not a clue!!
