Has anyone seen today's news item re - privatisatiion of employment services.

I remember a story not long after Labour were elected in 1997. Briefly, several senior members of the party went over to Wisconsin to look at Social Security systems there.

In one town the local employment/benefit office (or whatever the relevant name is) were pressurising new mothers to accept work in the local factory, in poor working conditions and low pay, with the threat of withdrawing benefit if they refused.

It turned out that the company who owned the factory also owned (or had the franchise of) the local employment/benefit office.

Happy Days!

What I think is also quite interesting about this news story is the fact that the Australian guru, Patrick McClure, who is over here promoting the efficiencies of getting the voluntary and community sector involved in job-seeking and the like, is the Chief Executive of an organisation called Mission Australia, who state on there website that they are:

'a non-denominational Christian organisation with a vision to spread the love of God and meet human need.

With more than 280 services across metropolitan, rural and regional Australia, in every State and Territory, Mission Australia aims to empower disadvantaged and isolated individuals, families and communities by giving them the support they need to get back on track, and lead more fulfilling lives.

Our services are centred around:

  • Family support initiatives for families and children in need;
  • Youth initiatives for disadvantaged young people;
  • Housing support initiatives for homeless people and those at risk of homelessness;
  • Employment and training initiatives for the long-term unemployed; and
  • Community building initiatives that help strengthen and empower entire communities.

According to their website, they had total income in 2004 of some $Aus182,635,443, which is roughly £80,000,000 - not bad for a "not-for-profit" organisation is it? To me, its the equivalent to the Salvation Army taking over half of the Jobcentres around the country and unemployed people being told "If you can find God, you can find a job".

And also 'moral advice' and preaching ethics, I presume.
