Self Employment and Permitted Work
Fri 16-Apr-04 02:49 PM

I don't know if anyone can help; I work for an European Social Fund project helping people in a rural part of Cornwall into work. Many of our clients are on IB, and due to the nature of the local labour market and their respective health problems, many clients understandably are attracted by the prospect of self employment. The problems begin when they try to pursue this via Permitted Work. According to the local Jobcentre, expenses incurred whilst carrying out this work cannot be disregarded. For example, a client working as a mobile hairdresser cannot have petrol costs, or the cost of products used disregarded. This especially causes difficulty for clients on the lower limit of permitted work. This appears to be unfair and somewhat illogical, since clients in the same position on JSA can have these expenses taken into account when deductions are being calculated.
