carer's allowance
Tue 26-Oct-04 10:16 AM

we have just phoned the carers allowance unit to ask for some information about a client and they said that they wanted us to give them a four figure security code before they would speak to us. we asked how we got one of these but they didn't know. Does anyone know?

I understand that DWP offices have identification numbers so it is possible that the person you spoke to thought you were DWP or thought you should have a similar number. I am not aware of any arrangements for non DWP to have identity numbers re CA Unit but am interested if anyone else knows of one.

I've found the CA unit to be the most amazingly inconsistent in Data Protection matters of all DWP units, and there's stiff competition for the title.

One person says "I will not do anything until I have written authority", and demands it by fax, upon receipt of which if you speak to that person again they deny having received it anyway. But the next person you speak to is happy to go on at length without a date of birth or address in sight. And then they change the alphabet splits they all cover frequently anyway.

On a practical level, if you rang at lunchtime, ring at another time, and vice versa (if unsuccessful try early morning/late afternoon, and try to memorise the jobsworth's tone of voice. If they answer the phone just say sorry wrong number). You'll prbably get a different person with a different 'policy'.
