funeral payment is not enough
Wed 16-Jun-04 03:51 PM

Has there ever been any moves to increase the basic amount covered by the social fund in respect of a funeral. I have had a number of queries recently and the £700 provided just about covers 50% of funeral expenses as the cheapest funeral is about £1,200 excluding grave/cremation fees. there seems to be a standard administration and legal fee which is in and around £600 therefore the other expenses are barely covered.
any responses would be welcome

As you say, the amount allowed is pretty lousy (though it did increase from £600 two or three years ago). But 'official' charges such as cremation or burial fees, medical charges and legal documentation to secure the release of the deceased's assets are payable in addition to the £700.
