from lib dem press release, received today ....... 'Next week millions of pensioners will be assessed for eligibility for the £200 Council Tax Refund. Some of those receiving less than £200 a year of Pension Credit might find themselves better off if they gave up the pension credit.
New figures revealed by David Laws MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, show that up to 64,500 could be better off giving up their Pension Credit. However the method of assessing this is so complicated that few are likely to take advantage.
This is because:
1. The £200 council tax refund announced by the Chancellor in his pre-Election Budget will not be given to those who receive the guarantee credit part of the Pension Credit. 2. Receipt of the guarantee credit is being used as a proxy for receipt of council tax benefit (no check is being made to see if people are actually receiving council tax benefit although 44% of all pensioners entitled are not claiming it). 3. 64,500 people receive less than £200 a year of Pension Credit.'
