Debt advisers: dedicated discussion forum?
Thu 05-Feb-09 04:06 PM

Does anybody know if there is an online forum for debt advisers (not debt collectors!) similar to rightsnet, and if there is, could you tell me where? Like a lot of welfs these days, I also get to do a lot of debt cases too and I would really like to have a forum where I could exchange information on the law and tactics, and negotiating methods.
If there isn't one, does anybody want to set one up on the same lines, only specialist advisers being able to join?

hi carol -

there's http://www.wiseradviser.org which has the support of, amongst others, adviceuk, citizens advice and the money advice trust .. definitely worth a look ...

cheers - shawn

(ps - on a wider point - and to piggy-back your posting - i'd also be interested in whether rightsnet users would find it useful if we had forums in others areas of social welfare law where there isn't alternative provision .... what do people think? ... if there is interest, we'd be happy to look at facilitating something here on rightsnet.)

I have previously used http://www.debthelpuk.co.uk and found it useful. It is a moderated forum, but I'm not too clear who is running it.

Not a charity, anyway (co, not org).

Hi Shawn

This would be extremely useful. As all advisers know, there is often overlap between different areas of welfare law and although we are often bound by our own job descriptions and contracts of employment from doing active casework outside of our own specialities, it is useful to be in a position to give actual advice before referring on and any forums which facilitate self-development and the sharing of knowledge can only be for the good.

Regards
Paul

I use the wiser adviser site.. It is very similar to this site.. In the level of advice you receive to questions posted.

I also use debthelpuk.. In fact I have helped moderate it.. Whilst DHUK is owned by a company - who provide IVAs etc. They do not get invoved in the forum and members are free to post whatever advice they feel appropriate.. I have been a member for around 5 years and never once seen anyone advise someone to contact the company who hosts it..

To answer Shawn's suggestion: if rightsnet wanted to host another forum for debt advisers, I would certainly join.

Think "org" is used if you're part of a larger organisation such as CAB and it's just "co" if you're independent?

Not sure but think this was how it was once explained to me.

Basingstoke Choral Society (a registered charity) is "org". But it isn't a company.
