Election 2024 Manifesto round-up | Labour: Employment
Commitments include introducing day one rights to parental leave, sick pay and protection from unfair dismissal, and ensuring the minimum wage is a 'genuine living wage'
The Labour Party has today launched its manifesto ahead of the General Election on 4 July 2024.
Employment commitments contained in Change include to -
- Implement a 'plan to make work pay' by -
- banning exploitative zero hours contracts;
- ending fire and rehire;
- introducing basic rights from day one to parental leave, sick pay, and protection from unfair dismissal;
- ensuring the minimum wage is a genuine living wage, by changing the remit of the independent Low Pay Commission so it accounts for the cost of living and removing the discriminatory age bands; and
- creating a Single Enforcement Body to ensure employment rights are upheld.
- Reform employment support so it drives growth and opportunity by -
- bringing Jobcentre Plus and the National Careers Service together to provide a national jobs and careers service, focusing on getting people into work and helping them get on at work;
- working with local areas to create plans to support more disabled people and those with health conditions into work;
- tackling the backlog of Access to Work claims;
- establishing a youth guarantee of access to training, an apprenticeship, or support to find work for all 18- to 21-year-olds;
- guaranteeing two weeks’ worth of work experience for every young person, improving careers advice in schools and colleges; and
- working with the Scottish and Welsh Governments, and Mayors and Combined Authorities in England, to ensure all aspects of its new approach to Jobcentre Plus and employment support partner effectively with devolved provision.
