Government must ‘grasp the nettle’ and fix social care once and for all, says NHS Confederation

Coalition of health organisations says that COVID-19 has demonstrated both the critical role that social care plays in the delivery of health and care services, and the need for fundamental reform

The government must 'grasp the nettle' and fix social care once and for all, the NHS Confederation has said.

In a new report, Social Care: Time to Grasp the Nettle, the NHS Confederation - a membership body of organisations that plan, commission and provide NHS services in England, Wales and Northern Ireland - points out that the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has demonstrated both the critical role that social care plays in the delivery of health and care services, and the need for fundamental reform.

Warning that without a sustainable social care system the NHS will not be able to deliver high-quality care in the wake of the pandemic, the Confederation sets out four key pillars it believes are needed to reset social care -

NB - in its role leading the Health for Care coalition, the NHS Confederation has written to the Prime Minister Boris Johnson urging him to set a timetable for reform to address both the immediate crisis, and to bring in comprehensive legislative proposals to place the sector on a sustainable footing.
