Welfare reform is moving at a rapid pace and it is essential to keep up-to-date with changes in order to give effective and accurate advice.

This half-day workshop aims to cover many of the current and imminent changes including -

  • The new work capability assessment - changes to the descriptors and new ways to be treated as having limited capability for work
  • The migration process from incapacity benefit / income support / severe disablement allowance to employment and support allowance – what can clients expect and what happens if they fail the assessment;
  • Restrictions to local housing allowance and other housing benefit changes – how and when this will affect new and existing claimants;
  • Changes in tax credits including reduced help with childcare, reduced availability of the family element, the effect of changes in income both in-year and out of year;
  • Changes to both the discretionary and regulated social fund including restrictions to the sure start maternity grant and limitations on crisis loans;
  • The new ‘work programme’ - what support and what expectations will this bring?
  • A8 nationals – what does the closure of the Worker Registration Scheme on 30th April 2011 mean in practice?

By the end of this workshop you will have -

  • Increased understanding of the legislative changes which have already started and those due to start later in 2011 and in 2012;
  • An awareness of how these changes are likely to impact on your clients; and
