This practical and tactical course is essential for anyone working with people with mental health problems who need support with benefits.
This course covers:
- Exploring what we mean by mental health and understanding mental health diagnosis, symptoms, treatments and services
- Tactics for supporting clients to secure ESA entitlement. This includes completing ESA50s, attending medicals, avoiding sanctions, getting into the Support Group, using reg 29, exceptional circumstances
- Top tips for DLA form filling, evidence gathering and challenging decisions
- The new Personal Independence Payment and implications for people with mental health problems
- Useful resources on mental health and benefits
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Identify the range of different mental health diagnosis, characteristics, symptoms and treatments
- Confidentially respond to clients in distress
- Support clients with mental health problems to navigate the benefits system and secure entitlement to ESA and DLA in a way that promotes recovery and independence
- Get the best supporting medical evidence for DLA and ESA claims
- Advise clients through the process of having their incapacity benefit converted to ESA
- Support clients to complete DLA forms effectively
- Challenge ESA and DLA decisions
- Explain how PIP is replacing DLA
