Charity Commission publishes recession tool for trustees

Checklist developed to help charities plan during the economic downturn

The Charity Commission has published a tool for trustees to use to help them develop a plan and timetable for action during recession.

The tool, in the form of a checklist, has been designed to be used by all charities and covers four areas -

  • strategy - opportunities and risks;
  • financial health;
  • governance; and
  • making the best of resources.

It asks a number of questions 'to help structure a discussion' amongst trustees to enable them to understand the implications for their organisation of the economic downturn and to ensure that they 'are acting appropriately in the current circumstances'. The checklist refers to the appropriate Charity Commission guidance on each of the topics and to other sources of information that organisations may find useful.

The tool The economic downturn: 15 questions trustees need to ask is available on the Charity Commission website.
