Acevo back statutory powers for Compact

96% of members vote in favour

A recent survey conducted by the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations (ACEVO) reveals that the majority of their members, 96% of the 139 respondents, believe the Compact should be backed up with statutory powers.

Chief Executive of ACEVO, Stephen Bubb criticised Compact Voice, the third sector body that promotes the Compact, for failing to back the move and said that -

'I have been disappointed that Compact Voice has not been as far behind this as it should be.'

Compact Voice has always argued that the partnership aspect of the agreement would be lost if it was made a legal requirement. Chair of Compact Voice, Simon Blake commented that -

'The key thing is that it is brilliant that we have got the debate. We need to make sure that people are contributing towards the debate and make sure that they understand what they are asking for.'

The Office of the Third Sector, the Commission for the Compact and Compact Voice has drawn together a group of experts to discuss potential options at a meeting in July.

The government has indicated that it will review the position in 2009.
