My client has moved in with her partner who is on ESA. She is not currently receiving ESA but thinks she will qualify. Any idea if the initial phone call to the DWP to add her to her partner’s ESA claim will take long? I need to book a home visit but am not sure how long it will take. Does the DWP effectively close the partner’s claim and just start a new joint claim for both of them?

In my experience they usually suspend claim and issue paper ESA3 (review form). Claim reassessed and put back into payment once form has been returned.

You could cut out the middleman

Complete an ESA1 https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/employment-and-support-allowance-claim-form

and send it in with a cover letter saying “please treat this as an ESA3 review form” I do that when my punters can’t cope with their post and lose forms repeatedly. When adding a partner it’ll set a trigger date to suspend the claim if it’s not returned so maybe best to just send the form in blind and follow it up.
