Hi ... looks like lots of you have already successfully logged in to the new site (phewee!) and are beginning to find your way around.

When you get a chance, do have a look at the new ‘my rightsnet area’ @  http://www.rightsnet.org.uk/my .....

.... and if your organisation has a subscription, do let us know which one of you would like to be your ‘subscription manager’ (S/he can then view and manage your organisation’s subscribers.)

Cheers - Shawn

I’ve changed my account name (when signing up, I don’t think I realised that the catchy title “Craven CAB welfare benefits” would be what was displayed on every post). I hope that’s ok. I expect that you don’t want people constantly chopping and changing, so that no one knows who they are talking to.

I think the new forum looks and works well. I’m guessing it will work a lot better on touchscreens than the old one, but the layout seems ok on a regular desktop, not too much scrolling.

Hi Jon ... no problem ..... nice to put a name to a post!

Yes, you can now change your username and screen name if you so please, in the new ‘my rightsnet’ area

Cheers - Shawn

No avatars 😊 Happy!

Sections headings in all capitals; less contrast on backgrounds; odd column layout on main pages. Less happy.

Hi Mike -

Yes I think we could do with some more contrast ... it’s better in some browsers than others ... leave it with me

Re the odd column layout on main pages ... any chance you could mail me a screen shot?

I haven’t had time to properly explore all of it but so far, Shawn, I think it’s splendid! Well done and thank you as always for running one of the best forums I have ever been a member of.

(and no- I’m not on the payroll- honest. Nor have I been drinking. Yet…)

Hi Shawn. By odd column layout I simply meant the new layout for stuff like news which has 3 items on 1 line and 2 on the next. Makes it less easy to read than plain old lists of news etc.

Shawn, is there any way of being able to view more than about a quarter of each page at a time (without shrinking the zoom so small that I can’t read the text)? I find the constant scrolling up and down the page on the new format a bit of a drag (I have some nerve damage that makes using a mouse painful) . I generally use IE windows 8.

Sorry, I appreciate that all the white space and oversized text is probably helpful for the visually impaired but is there any way of viewing the page without it?

“over-sized text”???

Point me in the direction of your over-sized text Billy. I’m on IE10 and W7. My browser is set to 125% magnification for all sites and the one thing I’m not getting on the new version of this site is over-sized text. The opposite in fact. I wonder whether this is browser specific.

Hi Mike

I’m not that tech savvy but, for example, your post above takes up about 90% of my screen

Sounding good to me 😊

More seriously, I think that’s the norm for me too and my browser as I say is set to default at 125% magnification so it could be a browser setting. The accidental pressing of CTRL and + can do that. Try CTRL and - to reverse it and see if there’s a happy medium.

That said, my (admittedly vague) recall is that a post has always occupied about that amount of space.

Hi ... just a quick post re what browsers people are using

A couple of you have sent in screenshots of some rather shocking and disturbing versions of rightsnet!

... digging further, it looks like it’s a result of some orgs still using quite old browsers, and in particular older versions of Internet Explorer

(The record thus far is IE6 which was launched in 2001 and hasn’t been updated since 2008 ...  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Explorer_6)

rightsnet does looks pretty much like it should in IE9 and beyond .. and so if you’re on an older version we’d encourage you to upgrade if you can (although we realise that, for some of you, your org will have bolted it down) or perhaps consider a different browser (for example, we know that many of you are using Chrome or Firefox)

Cheers - Shawn

Mucho impressed that I can now use a screen name as well as my log in; there were only so many permutations of my name I could muster. Also very pleased to have messaging functionality back again.

Hi

I can’t move our subscription over.  When I click to confimm that the details are correct then nothing happens.  Thus I can’t view any summaries of UT decisions via the case law button.

Quick Q (I hope).

Why do WB case summaries show up on the home page under Welfare Rights but not on the Welfare Rights subpage itself? Am I missing something?

Tried to attach screenshots but it said they were too big.

Hi Paul -

The home page displays a mixed feed of news and caselaw under each area of law .....

... however when you click on an area of law from the navigation bar, the content splits down into news and caselaw

For example:

- http://www.rightsnet.org.uk/welfare-rights/caselaw

(This then allows us to bolt on case law specific search functionality to enable you to search by benefit and/or jursidiction ... for example here are the welfare rights Supreme Court judgments ... http://www.rightsnet.org.uk/welfare-rights/caselaw/category/supreme-court)
