I am just looking for some guidance if anyone has had sucess getting Income Support for a carer of whom the care recipient is awaiting the PIP award.

I have had a look in the rights handbook and it does state that there is an eligibility for 26 weeks while waiting for the claim to be processed.

In reality I can see it just being refused so I am wondering what evidence I can suggest to include with the claim to try and secure it for them.

The family are in dire straits, mother is wheelchair bound multiple ESA claim forms lost, previouis DLA claim was closed for non return of a form. Her sons CA and IS stopped and they have been living on food parcels and selling items in the home.

Any advice very much appreciated.

In a similar case my colleague sent the DWP details of the help given by the carer in the PIP 2 claim form & the IS section accepted it.

I had success on a claim for Income Support whilst awaiting a decision on DLA (for a child). Mother had to attend JCP for interview but was advised about it being possible to claim as a carer for up to 26 wks, however, claim for DLA was unsuccessful and now appealing, and this is not covered by the 26 wks, it is only until a decision is made. So if like mine was made 8 weeks after submission, IS will cease.  IS is paid at basic rate until DLA award allows the Carer’s Allowance claim to be made but will be revised when successful. In the interim period my customer has claimed ESA. Remember CA can be fully backdated when linked to a successful appeal.

However, the lengthy delays in PIP decisions may be beneficial in such cases :-)
