is there anything preventing you claiming Child benefit and child tax credits for a dependant 17 year old in full time qualifying education who you have had a child with but are separated from (never married)

You can’t claim CB for your partner, so they’d have to show that they are no longer a couple. But also one would have to show that they were ‘responsible’ for the other. It might be tricky to show that their relationship is such that they shouldn’t be considered a couple, yet they are close enough for one to have responsibility for the other?
