someone’s submitted an FOI request asking -

‘Do people on benefits get a supplement if they own a dog. If so, is such a supplement limited to dogs, or are there other pets that attract enhancement of benefits payable to a claimant ...’

Answers on a postcard ... or here https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/foi-query-about-getting-additional-benefit-payment-when-a-claimant-owns-a-pet

I think Single Persons Cat Credit sounds plausible.

“No additional Jobseeker’s Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance or Income Support is paid to claimants because they own a dog or any other pets.”

So the increase isn’t paid with JSA, ESA or IS. What about all the other benefits then?

Disability Dog Allowance?
Invalid Cat Allowance?

This has put me into a really difficult position. Who am I going to believe - the DWP or the guy down the pub with the daily mail sticking out of his back pocket…
That’s not a fair choice!

Dogs Dinner Allowance

Surely the Dog’s Lunch Allowance, or an Alsatian Allowance?

From memory, and confident assertions of many clients, it used to be only for Gypsies and was paid together with their colour TV and holiday allowances.  It has presumably been extended to other groups subsequently.

And surely to anyone not born in this country. Surely?

I remember a person I worked with (a CPN) that said her husband (a policeman) had been told that after 5 children on benefits you got a new TV. I thought she was being ironic. She wasn’t and then started questioning my knowledge when I almost fell into the foetal position laughing/crying. I often wonder if she got her qualifications off Ebay.

Stop it, all of you, immediately. If I laugh any more I’m going to have to go home & change.

Way back many many years ago, when I was a young & fresh faced recent graduate, I had an aptitude test at Leeds CC for Housing Benefits assessors, prior to interview. Pet premiums were the scenario they used. Maybe they knew something I didn’t.

I once took a very difficult call on our advice line from a very distressed lady, wanting to claim benefits for her dog.  She was really quite insistent.  It was only after some time that I discovered it was a (long since departed) colleague making a prank call from next door.
