UC ‘migration’ early??

In Hartlepool we have come across at least 4 instances of people on JSA and IS reporting to us that they have been told by Jobcentre that they need to claim UC.  These are cases where there is no new claim for benefit required, they are simply being contacted and told to that they have to transfer to UC.  We are raising this locally as it may be that staff training has gone awry somewhere.

But this kind of misadvice strikes me as fairly serious , as this is not ‘natural migration’ it is ‘managed migration’ but early, outside of the planned ‘roll out’ advised to parliament by DWP.

Anyone else coming across this?

That’s very interesting Sarah - and worrying! - I have raised it via my contacts too and will let you know when I hear anything

Has there been any decrease in the amount of benefit paid?

I can only answer that for one of the cases I am dealing with personally. Yes, because she has received hardship payments while Sanctioned and these are repayable under UC.  There has also been a significant impact on the rent account due to the payments of housing costs element.

It’s about more than just the amount of benefit isnt it?

Yes, but a managed migration event would also include transitional protection.

We are here too - I am busy investigating a case of a young person who was on IS as estranged from parents, etc and in education. All going swimmingly then out of the blue Newcastle JCP advise she needs to claim UC. According to client’s social worker she is on full work conditionality - even finding a job still has UC on her back to find a better paid job!
