income support and career breaks
Tue 22-Jun-04 02:04 PM

hi everyone, is there any one who can answer the following question?

a client has a disabled child for whom he recives carers allowance, also works. wishes to take a career break fo 5 years to look after that child on 'properly'

could he have an entitlement to income support?? i suspect the issue is he would still be regarded as employed, even though he would normally qualify under carer allowance rules. any ideas? any one?

thanks in advance!!!

Don't understand. How would he be in remunerative work?

I agree. I can see what's troubling jav, though. The employer is keeping the guy's job open for him. But that's not the same as working. Even folks getting contractual sick pay from their employers can get an IS top-up if they need it, because they aren't actually working for 16+ hours a week. jav's chap has no worries on this score.
